Editing
Editing
After all of the filming the next job was to edit all the footage and turn it into the two minute opening. So 1st obviously we uploaded all of our footage off the tape onto an iMac using a fire-wire and then watched through it all, cutting it into the separate shots and moving them to the side so that it was easy to see them all. The next thing to do was turn the shots of the building from outside into the shots we wanted at the start of the film. To do this I created a still frame in each shot at the part that showed the building the best. Throughout the editing I was the one sat at the computer actually doing it, with everyone else sat around me helping with the ideas on how we wanted it to look. It was now that I had the idea of having shots of me flashing between the images of the outside whilst they were changing. To do this I cut up a close up of me tied to the chair which started at one shoulder and panned over showing my face and then my other shoulder. I then created three more still frames, one of my head and one shoulder, one of my head, then one of my head and my other shoulder. I then also created a still frame of a shot from behind the chair showing me tied up. I then put these shots into the start of the film, one between each of the shots of the outside. To make the transitions smoother I then put a flash effect on, which would make it flash from a shot of outside quickly to one of me inside. The idea of the flash would later tie in with when I created the sound for the film. After doing all of this we decided to put the credits of the film at the start, with shots showing the film company JamesWorks films producing the film in association with GC Productions
Now we had the opening of the two minutes we now needed to make up the rest of it, the rest being footage of the goings on inside the building. The 1st shot I put in was one that starts tilting up to the ceiling showing the light turning on, after which it then tilts down to show me tied to a chair in the middle of a room looking as if i've just com around after being knocked out or something. The next load of shots show the kidnappers entering the room and revealing a range of weapons on a table at the side of the room, except I can't see any of this of course as I'm blindfolded. In the end we had to cut down these shots as the opening ran over two minutes, and also there were slight pauses at the end of some shots where a person acting had finished acting the scene but the camera was still rolling.. We now had to bring the opening of the film to an end. My idea for the end was to show a shot of the kidnappers leaving the room., The door shutting then a zoom on the back of the door which has a piece of paper showing the films name being held up by a knife. As I stated earlier in the production log though we had a propblem with this as it wasn't clear enough to read what it said on the paper. To get around this I played around with the contrast and brightness of the shot to make it clear. To then finish it off I created more still frames of me tied up and applied the same flashing effect as at the start of the film. Eventually though we thought this was too similar to the start of the opening so we changed the shots of to still frames of the building. We also then decided the part with the title on the back of the door didn't work as it didn't look smooth enough so we changed it to just show a shot of the door closing before the shots of the building with the flashing effect. We then ended the openin with with the title of the film over a black background which then faded out. The last thing I did wasa to put in titles showing our names the 1st time we were shown in the opening sequences, which made it look more like a film opening when the main actors names are shown.

Production Diary
Filming
25th February
Today was the 1st day of filming. Today we spent the 1st hour checking the changes we have made to the script are alright and setting up/making sure the room is just how we want it. I then got changed, dirtying my clothes, using Ketchup as fake blood on my face and being sprayed with water to look like i was sweating. I then got tied to the cheer in the middle of the room by me legs and my hands tied behind my back. At the same time The people playing the kidnappers got into costume, wearing all black and balaclavas. Also the 4th person in the group was setting up the camera and testing shot angles and positions. After all of this we shot the 1st scenes that would be shown from inside the room. Mainly close ups of me and the kidnappers entering the room. After looking back at the footage we then shot from a few different angles and heights before deciding we were happy with the three hours work.
2nd March
Today was the 2nd day of filming bruise. Again I was obviosuly the kidnappee, and today after making sure the room was just as it was last week we filmed the next number of shots in the film. This time it was footage of both the kidnappers coming into the room, whispering to eachother, and showing of a few things around the room like weapons. (Not that I could see any of this being filmed as the whole time I was blindfolded apart from when we had breaks.) After the two hours were all happy with the footage we shot and called it a day.
9th March
Today we had our 3rd day of filming. I had to attempt more acting today as we filmed shots of the kidnappers interacting with me. I found this difficult, as it wasn't always easy to keep a straight face. We filmed from a number of different angles and heights again over and over until we were happy with the outcome. The footage we got today was also the last footage we needed to shoot apart from a few changes to footage we had shot on earlier days. It was of the kidnappers interacting with me and also leaving me in the room, which would be the end of the opening. There were a few problems with the filming as our idea for the titles would be a piece of paper on the back of the door saying the name of the film, (bruise) which would be zoomed in on when the door shut. The piece of paper being held up by a knife. The 1st problem we had was shutting the door too hard and the knife falling out obviously letting the paper fall to the ground, the next problem being when one of the people playing kidnappers tried to shut the door not as hard it didn't shut and swung back open. This was basically a question of shutting the door just hard enough for the latch to catch on it without knocking the knife out. The next problem was whether to turn the light off as the kidnappers walked out or not. We tried it with the light on and off. It looked better with the light off, but when zooming in on the door it was hard to make out the titles. We solved this by playing with the contrast when editing to make it clearer.

Locations
Locations
For our film we needed two locations. An interior and exterior location. The inside location being the one where the majority of the filming would take place as this would be the kidnap room, the outside location mainly being just to het set the scene and establish where the room is. Although the room we used wasn't actually in the outside loaction we found it does look as if it could be. The 1st one we looked for was an outside location as this one would not need much filming done so could be done 1st. In my mind I thought we should look for a place like an old abonded factory or warehouse, something which would look intimidating, powerful and maybe abit creepy from outside. Finding an abandoned building would obviously give the building an unused look where a kidnap could take place, so this was essential. Very fortunately for us there is a big oldabandoned rubber factory in my local area that I thought would fit the bill perfectly. So we went down with a camera had a look and it was. It is big unused and looks creepy. The day that we went down was a clear blue sky sunny day, which you would think makes a building look less creepy. I don't think it does though as the building in the sun outside creates a contrast with the events that are happening inside it. So after deciding as a group on using this place we shot the footage we needed for the outside of the building as there would be no people in it and returned back to college.
So with this the next location we needed was the room where the kidnap and the rest of the footage would be. My ideal room would be old and unused just like the factory, dirty, dusty and dark to a certain degree that filming would still be clear. At 1st we looked for a room around Talbot House, the building where my colelge is based, to try and find a room we could change to look like this. Upon going up into the old attics we realised they hadn't been used in a long time and one of the rooms up there was perfect. Covered in dust, full of old junk that helped add to the mise-en-scene, and after covering the windown in bits of cardboard and paper lying around on the floor also dark. Therfore making the room just how I imagined it. After making a few changes in the room, (moving bits of furniture around etc.) the room was ready for filming. Below are pictures of both the outside building and inside.

For the main task of our media studies course we had to design, film and edit the 1st two minutes of the opening of a film. It had to have good continuity, different shots and be good enough to make you want to watch the rest of the film as if it was real. In my group there were four of us, and we decided to call our production company GC productions. One of the 1st things we did was to carry out polls on how often people go to the cinema and what type of film they like to watch there. We carried out these polls around college, making it on people around our own age, 16-19.
After looking at the results of what films people like to watch it was clear that the favoured genres are: Action/Thriller, Horror, Adventure and Sci-Fi. From this we decided that we should make our film in one of these genres.
After looking at the results of what films people like to watch it was clear that the favoured genres are: Action/Thriller, Horror, Adventure and Sci-Fi. From this we decided that we should make our film in one of these genres.
To help our understanding of these film genres we studied the openings of films from these genres. The three film openings I watched were those of: 16 blocks, an action thriller starring Bruce Willis, Casino Royale which is one of the James Bond franchise making it also an action thriller including fantasy which stars Daniel Craig and finally Saw, a horror/thriller. We chose not to include a sci-fi film opening as we did not have the technology or money to create a decent looking sci-fi film opening which would include lots of special effects and costumes. This made it either an action/thriller or a horror that we decided we would make one of.
The opening to 16 blocks isn't the fastest of openings action wise, but establishes the location and scene quickly and also shows the main character that will feature in the film, that being Bruce Willis. The opening of Casino Royale as you would expect in a typical James Bond film is full of action, and gives an insight into the rest of the film as if the opening is action packed you would naturally presume the rest will be as well. It does set the scene so to speak, but as there are a number of locations in the film you cannot really set the scene for the film. I liked the opening of this film as straight away all of the action in it makes you want to watch on. The opening of Saw shows kidnap victims being held hostage, which again straight away for me made me want to watch on as I wanted to know what happens to them. The opening of this film is a lot darker and grimmer, as you would expect with a horror film, but one thing I did notice was that the mise-en-scene in the film had been thought out really well down to the last detail. I say this because the rooms in which the hostage are held must look real enough for someone to be held in, and every last detail down to things like how dirter the room is has been thought about. Below is a behind the scenes shot from Saw which shows the director talking to one of the actors playing one of the people who has been kidnapped, and also shows part of the room.
I could not find a link to the opening of Saw on the internet, but below is a link to a website that contains trailers for the film, full cast lists and the synopsis of the film.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387564/
Here is also a link for the opening of Casino Royale, and the second link goes to the same website as the link for Saw, except of course this time containing all of the information on Casino Royale.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiGy8lD4a_c
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381061/
And also here is a link to a trailer for 16 blocks as again I couldn't find one for the opening of the film.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16JgiFMcr6w
After watching and studying these openings it is clear the general theme is some kind of action happening in the opening to entice the people watching, possibly some kind of cliffhanger that will be concluded later in the film. At 1st we had a few different ideas for what our film could be, ranging from a horror kidnap to a James Bond style film. In the end it was my idea of a kidnap that we chose, and seeings as it was my idea I also ended up being the person who would be kidnapped in the film. We decided against an action/thriller as we thought the film opening might come out to samey to already made films as our ideas were based around already made action thrillers. After we settled on this idea of a kidnap the next step for us was to move on to planning of the film.
